Energy Storage for Efficient Battery Backup Power Solutions
The Cymbet EnerChip™ family of solid-state, rechargeable thin-film batteries is a new innovation in energy management and energy storage. Packaged as a Surface Mount Technology (SMT) component, the EnerChip provides energy storage in a form factor and with a convenience not previously attainable using conventional solutions such as lithium coin cells and super capacitors. Cymbet’s EnerChip family is well suited for applications where battery backup power is needed to maintain the settings of microcontroller memories, real-time-clocks and SRAM during power loss or power failures. The devices can provide back-up power ranging from a few hours to several weeks depending on the stand-by current requirements of the system.
There are 4 devices in the EnerChip product line:
- EnerChip CBC012: a 12uAh thin-film battery
- EnerChip CBC050: a 50uAh thin-film battery
- EnerChip CC CBC3112: a 12uAh battery combined with Integrated Battery Management
- EnerChip CC CBC3150: a 50uAh battery combined with Integrated Battery Management

The EnerChip is an Eco-friendly device, providing long intervals of operation between recharges. When coupled with energy harvesting techniques, these devices can provide the energy storage to build self-contained, long lived powered systems that have minimal negative environmental impact. As a solid-state device, the EnerChip is lead-free and contains no hazardous materials, flammable solvents or liquids that can harm the user or the environment, therefore eliminating or reducing end-of-life product costs. Environmental friendliness is a key EnerChip attribute, since the product is designed to eliminate battery replacement and last the life of the product it powers.

All members of the EnerChip family are reflow tolerant and are available in Tape and Reel for use with high-speed SMT pick & place assembly processes. The devices offer a fast recharge time ( 30 minutes to 80%), and are capable of greater than 5000 charge/discharge cycles. EnerChips do not suffer from the self-discharge limitations associated with super capacitors or shelf life limitations common to chemical batteries.

To facilitate easy evaluation of the EnerChip rechargeable battery products, Evaluation Kits have been created that provide everything a designer needs to fully evaluate the performance and operation of the EnerChip energy storage devices.
